The Gerund as Object

3. Дополнение.
            В этой функции герундий находится в предложении за сказуемым и может быть прямым дополнением (не имеет перед собой предлога) или косвенным (предложным) дополнением. Герундий передается на русский язык отглагольным существительным, неопределенной формой глагола или придаточным предложением.
            а) В функции прямого дополнения герундий чаще всего употребляется после сказуемого, выраженного такими глаголами как:
to like, to love                    – нравиться, любить
to enjoy                              – пользоваться (с удовольствием), нравиться
to hate                                – очень не нравиться, ненавидеть
to excuse                            – извинять, прощать
to avoid                              – избегать, не делать
to prefer                             – предпочитать
to regret                             – сожалеть (о)
to want, to need                 – нуждаться (в)
to feel like                         – хотеть, испытывать желание
to mind, to oppose            – возражать, быть против

e.g. You should avoid catching cold.
       Вам нужно избегать простуды.
e.g. Do you mind helping him now?
      Вы не против того, чтобы помочь ему сейчас?
e.g. He regrets having said such words.
       Он сожалел, что сказал такие слова.
e.g. The museum wants remodeling.
       Музей нуждается в реконструкции.

б) В функции косвенного (предложного) дополнения герундий употребляется после глаголов с предлогами, после глагольных фраз с предлогами или после сложных предлогов:
to account for – объяснять (чем-либо)
to accuse of – обвинять в
to aim at – стремиться к, ставить целью
to complain of – жаловаться на
to credit with – приписывать (кому … что-л.)
to depend on – зависеть от
to fall to – начинать, приниматься
to insist on – настаивать на
to keep from – удержать от, помешать
to object to – возражать, быть против
to prevent from – мешать, препятствовать
to provide for – предусматривать
to rely on – полагаться на, зависеть от
to result in – приводить к
to result from – быть результатом (чего-либо)
to succeed in – удаваться
to suspect of – подозревать в
to be capable of – быть способным на (к)
to be fond of – очень любить
to be furious at – очень рассердиться, прийти в ярость
to be interested in – интересоваться
to be responsible for – быть ответственным
to be on the point of – собираться сделать что-то (чуть не …)
to be in the habit of – иметь обыкновение
to be good at – хорошо разбираться в, хорошо владеть
to be bad at – плохо разбираться в, плохо владеть
to be engaged in – быть занятым чем-либо
to get used to – привыкнуть к
to look forward to – предвкушать удовольствие от, ждать с нетерпением

far from – далеко от того, чтобы; далеко не
instead of – вместо того чтобы

e.g. The archaeologists succeeded in excavating several new sites.
       Археологам удалось раскопать несколько новых участков.
e.g. We can’t get used to being treated so badly.
       Мы не можем привыкнуть к тому, что с нами так плохо обращаются.
e.g. I am sure he was far from giving any details of the plan.
      Я уверен, он был далеко от того, чтобы дать какие-либо детали плана.

Упражнение 1. Раскройте скобки в предложениях, используя нужную форму герундия в функции прямого дополнения.
            1. Why do you usually avoid (to take part) in discussions? 2. He tried to avoid (to see) by anybody. 3. Don’t drink water. It needs (to filter). 4. He hated (to remind) people of their duties or ( to remind) of his. 5. Some students prefer (to ask) questions from their teachers, they don’t feel like (to ask) by teachers. 6. Do you mind (to stay) here for another week? 7. He remembers (to give) my notes; I wanted to help him. 8. The students hated to (to send) to that far-off place. 9. I hope you don’t regret (to help) your friend in that situation, though he likes (to help) by people. 10. You will enjoy (to visit) the National Museum.

Упражнение 2. Раскройте скобки в предложениях, используя нужную форму герундия в функции предложного дополнения.
            1. Everyone insisted on (to include) the question in the agenda. 2. The weather prevented us from (to take part) in the football match. 3. People are interested in (to establish) good relations with their neighbours. 4. William always apologises for (not to do) his work carefully. 5. This man was accused of (to break) the regulations of the company. 6. The head of the laboratory will be much surprised at (not to get) your report. 7. Her poor knowledge of the subject prevented her from (to get) an excellent mark at the exam. 8. I consider that you are far from (to praise), your results are not very fine. 9. Are you engaged in (to settle) your problem. 10. You should get used to (to treat) people the way you yourself are fond of (to treat) by them.

Упражнение 3. Составьте предложения, соединяя части А и Б и заменяя инфинитив в части Б на герундий соответствующей формы.

Упражнение 4. Измените предложения по образцу так, чтобы в них был использован герундий в функции дополнения (прямого или косвенного с предлогом). Используйте необходимые глаголы из списка.
О б р а з е ц: I might give a review paper at the conference.
                      I think of giving a review paper at the conference.
            1. I am collecting material for this paper now. 2. The University ought to have qualified teachers. 3. The new project is to train young scientists. 4. We should help scientists to exchange views and information. 5. I shall consider only one problem at a time. 6. We wanted to find reasons for this discrepancy. 7. The laboratory had a task to carry out another experiment. 8. The two results are different because two different methods of investigation were used. 9. Professor Fox does not want to apply any other technique. 10. Parents would like to give their children good education.
            (to be engaged in, to be interested in, to aim at, to need, to want, to provide for, to insist on, to object to, to look forward to, to differ in)

Упражнение 5. Переведите предложения на русский язык, учитывая особенности герундия в функции дополнения.
            1. The storm prevented the expedition from reaching the place in time. 2. The child doesn’t like being read to, he prefers reading books. 3. Do not be disappointed at not finding the way out of the situation. 4. The audience enjoyed listening to the speech. 5. We usually hate borrowing things from people. 6. The computer didn’t work; it prevented from e-mailing the information. 7. The students are not informed yet of having been divided into groups. 8. Can we rely on being promoted next year? 9. Would you mind participating in the work? 10. The boy is so good at doing sums, though not so good at writing. 11. Mr. Stiles mentioned having made some experiments in chemistry. 12. George hates treating people like that. 13. Lawrence can’t stand being shouted at. 14. Everybody likes being liked. 15. The flowers want watering. 16. Your shoes need polishing. 17. The house requires painting. 18. Why risk being killed? 19. Avoid being worried or worrying others. 20. Why did you give up trying? 21. The boy was accused of betraying his friends. 22. He accused him of having betrayed our common cause. 23. We suspected her of giving us false information. 24. I don’t approve of supporting Walter. 25. Do you object to quoting a passage from the book? 26. Who is responsible for delivering the luggage? 27. I’m looking forward to seeing Mrs. Eden.

Упражнение 6. Переведите следующие предложения на английский язык, исполь­зуя выражения, данные ниже:
to be sure of — быть уверенным (в), to be proud of — гор­диться чем-либо/кем-либо, to be fond of — увлекаться чем-либо, to be guilty of — быть виновным (в), to be interested in—ин­тересоваться чем-либо, to be surprised at — удивляться чему-либо, to be good at — хорошо справляться (с), to be pleased with — быть довольным чем-либо, to be displeased with — быть недовольным чем-либо, to be engaged in — заниматься чем-либо.
1. (Он виновен в том, что) deceiving his friends. 2. (Они гордятся тем, что) having completed the job. 3. (Они уверены, что) their winning the debate in the House of Commons. 4. Упражнение 7. Переведите предложения на английский язык, обращая внимание на герундий в функции дополнения (прямого или косвенного).
            1. Студенты не перестали обсуждать эту проблему даже после занятий. 2. Мы не рискнули поднять этот вопрос на семинаре. 3. Руководитель не возражает против раскопок этого участка. 4. Он извинился за то, что заставил нас ждать. 5. Я настаиваю на подписании документа обеими сторонами. 6. Этот мальчик привык, что с ним так обращаются. 7. Мы уже устали от ваших комплиментов. 8. Я не против того, чтобы взять его в экспедицию. 9. Вашу курсовую работу нужно переписать. 10. Декан был разочарован, что его не предупредили обо всех изменениях. 11. Болезнь помешала ему приехать на конгресс. 12. Этот человек плохо разбирается в анализе фактов.

Упражнение 8. Переведите предложения на русский язык, обращая внимание на герундий; там, где можно, дайте несколько вариантов перевода.
1.      He was fond of visiting new scenes and observing strange characters and manners.
2.      He was educated in Oxford, and devoted himself to the study of medicine, but his weak health prevented him from becoming a physician by profession.
3.      All these communities relied mainly on hunting, fowling and fishing.
4.      From these examples it is easy to see that climate by itself is capable of influencing culture.
5.      Elizabeth hindered France from giving effective aid to Mary Stuart by threats of an alliance with Spain.
6.      These strange-looking marks on bricks and tablets of clay or cut on rocks were known to Europeans for many years before anyone succeeded in finding out what they meant.
7.      This book hardly explains why three thousand ordinary soldiers, representatives of peasantry, marched into Senate Square in St. Petersburg on December 14, in an effort to keep Nicolas I from being crowned tsar.
8.      The Truman Doctrine policy aim was to “contain”, or limit, Communist governments to those countries where they already existed, and to prevent communism from being imposed by force in other nations.
9.      There is hardly any person who likes being criticized.
10.  He hates both interrupting people and being interrupted as well.
11.  My watch is twenty minutes slow, obviously it needs cleaning or even repairing.

12.  You needn’t bother; he prefers finding the way out by himself.
