Gerund as Part of Predicate

2. Часть сказуемого.

            Следует помнить, что герундий – это неличная форма глагола, поэтому он не может самостоятельно образовывать сказуемое. В составе сказуемого герундий имеет перед собой глагол, указывающий на время. Герундий в этой функции употребляется после глаголов и выражений:

to be – состоять в том, чтобы; заключаться в том, чтобы; быть; являться;

to begin, to start – начать, приступить;

to finish, to stop – перестать, прекратить;

to continue, to keep (on), to go on – продолжать;

can’t help – на мочь не;

to be worth while – стоит (сделать);

to be for – быть за, выступать за;

to be against – быть против, выступать против.

            В этой функции герундий передается на русский язык отглагольным существительным, неопределенной формой глагола или придаточным предложением.

e.g. My hobby at that time was collecting coins.

       Моим любимым занятием в то время было коллекционирование монет.

e.g. The supervisor was against accepting he proposal.

       Научный руководитель был против принятия плана.

e.g. The expedition members kept on digging the site.

       Члены экспедиции продолжали раскопки местности.

e.g. The laboratory assistant was for being promoted to a higher position.

       Лаборант был за то, чтобы его повысили по службе.

e.g Under such condition he couldn’t help arguing.

      При таком условии он не мог не спорить.

e.g. We know he stopped conducting the experiment.

       Мы знаем, что он прекратил проведение эксперимента.

e.g. The report was worth discussing in detail.

       Доклад стоило подробно обсудить.

Упражнение 3. Переведите предложения, обращая внимание на герундий в составе сказуемого.

Упражнение 4. Переведите предложения на английский язык, употребляя герундий в составе сказуемого.

Упражнение 5. Проанализируйте предложения и переведите их на русский язык, учитывая особенности герундия в функции части сказуемого.

1.      On the swampy banks they began cutting down bushes and trees and building rough shelters for themselves.

2.      Europeans would soon name the new continent America, but for many years they went on calling its inhabitants Indians.

9.      The chief of the tribe was for leaving the old site and for moving more to the west.

10.  Why not continue using the previous method? Are you completely against applying it in the experiment?
